It’s that time of the year again when any food you eat that isn’t chocolate is just a waste of precious calories. Forget the diets, chuck on your fat pants and if you do it right you’ll only be waking up from a diabetic coma in May.

DIY Vegetarian Rice Paper Rolls

It’s a beautiful summer day here and it’s the sort of weather where you want to eat fresh, healthy food but its hot so you don’t always want to eat huge amounts of food and feel full and sluggish. That’s where today’s tutorial comes in. I really wanted to do a DIY today but I couldn’t figure out what to write about. So I started to make lunch and I realised this is a great recipe and one I should share. Now I obviously didn’t invent rice paper rolls (I’m not that good) but this is my way of making them by hand rather than buying them already made.

So Let’s Get Started!

You Will Need
-Carrot
-Cucumber
-Baby Spinach Leaves
-Bean Shoots
-Avocado
-Sweet Chilli Sauce
-A pack of Dried Rice Paper Sheets
-A Container filled with Lukewarm Water
-A Clean Tea-Towel

NOTE: There are no amounts given as you estimate how much you’ll need depending on how many rice paper rolls you want.

Begin by chopping your carrot, cucumber and baby spinach leaves into strips

Now mash your avocado using a fork

Step 2

Place each rice paper sheet into the container filled with lukewarm water and wait for about 30 seconds or until they become soft and pliable. Only do this with one sheet at a time or they will all stick together

Step 3

Place each sheet on a clean tea-towel and pat dry

Step 4

Place your rice paper sheet on a plate and start by smearing mashed avocado down the centre

Step 5

Now add some carrot on top of the avocado,

Then add the cucumber,

And add the spinach leaves and been shoots.

Step 8

Now fold the bottom of the rice paper sheet up onto the filling and then fold both sides in. Serve with Sweet Chilli Sauce.

DIY Vegetarian Rice Paper Rolls

These are so delicious and so versatile. I’m a vegetarian so I have mine with just veggies or some tofu but you can really put whatever you want in these and of course this can be done with meat (Crab and Prawn seem to be very popular). This is such a nice thing to make for lunch and if they are kept cold these last very well so you could take it to work or school. This can also make great finger food for cocktail parties or also make great entrees at a dinner party as they are not too filling but full of flavour.

DIY Double Decker Brownie-Cookie Slice

Hi Deerest Friends,

You have to give it to the Americans. They have the uncanny ability of taking two yummy foods and creating some sort of crazy-delicious hybrid. Usually making me a cookie or giving me some brownie would be more than enough to make me smile but when I heard about this recipe, I couldn’t resist giving it a try! Part fudgy brownie, part moist choc-chip cookie; today’s tutorial is the completely delicious, Double Decker Brownie-Cookie Slice. Now making two separate recipes at the same time and having to combine them together may sound a bit tricky, but stick with me it’s easy as… well… cake!

So Let’s Get Started

You Will Need
-A 30x20cm slice pan
-Baking paper
-2 Saucepans (medium saucepan)
-1 Medium-sized bowl
-Sieve

For the Brownie Layer:
-180gm of Salted Butter
-¾ cup Unsweetened Good-quality Cocoa Powder
-1 ½ cups White Sugar
-2 large Eggs
-½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
-¾ cup All-purpose (Plain) Flour

For the Cookie Layer:
-180gm of Salted Butter
-1 cup, packed Brown Sugar
-1 ½ cups All-purpose (Plain) Flour
-½ teaspoon Baking Soda
-1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
-1 cup Milk (Semisweet) Chocolate Chips

Preheat oven to 170°C and lightly grease a 20×30cm baking pan and cover the inside with baking paper.

Step 1

Now to begin the cookie layer, put butter in a medium saucepan and melt over low/medium heat. Once all the butter is melted, take the pan off the heat and whisk in brown sugar until no lumps remain. Set aside to cool while you proceed to start the brownie layer.

Step 2

To begin the brownie layer, put the butter in medium saucepan and melt over low/medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once the butter is melted, take the pan off the heat and sift in cocoa powder. Mix until smooth and then add sugar and whisk until blended.

Step 3

Step 4

Add one egg at a time to the brownie mixture and whisk after each addition. Also add in vanilla. Sift flour over the chocolate mixture and stir with a rubber spatula until blended. Be careful not to over-mix as you may make the mixture too tough.

Step 5

Now back to the cookie mixture. In a small bowl mix together sifted flour and baking soda.

Step 6

Add the egg and vanilla to the cooled butter mixture and whisk until blended. Then pour the flour mixture into the butter mixture and stir until blended. Add chocolate chips to cookie mixture and mix well to distribute them evenly.

Step 7

Pour the brownie mixture into the base of the prepared pan. Use a spatula to spread evenly. Now drop the cookie dough over the brownie batter in large scoopfuls and spread evenly with a rubber spatula. Be careful to evenly drop batter across the brownie layer because it gets difficult to spread.

Step 8

Now put in the preheated oven and bake for 30-40 minutes, turning your pan every 10 minutes. When a wooden toothpick inserted into the slice comes out with gooey clumps of brownie sticking to it, turn your oven off and take the pan out. Allow time to cool before cutting.

This is so delicious and has automatically become one of my favourites! I will definitely be repeating this recipe again and again. This is a really unique, quirky idea that would be a great contribution to any party and would also make a really great gift.

DIY Chocolate Mousse

Whether it’s summer or winter where you are, there are always times where you desperately need comfort food. You’ve just been dumped. You have PMS. You’ve just finished watching The Notebook after being dumped whilst having PMS. Well I can’t fix those problems but I can promise you that this DIY tutorial will make you feel so much better.

I am a very modest person but I make the best chocolate mousse in the world. Really.

All year long, I get requests from family and friends regarding this mousse. If it weren’t for this mousse they all would have probably stoped talking to me years ago. Now “best chocolate mousse in the world” may sound like a big claim but after you try this you will be agreeing with me. And if you don’t I will ignore you anyway.

So Let’s Get Started!

You Will Need
-3 Mixing Bowls (one large, two medium sized)
-Double Boiler
-Electric Beaters
-Large Metal Spoon
-Spoons
-Serving bowls

For the Chocolate Mousse:
-300g of Good-Quality Chocolate (I use a combination of 150g of Dark, 100g of Milk and 50g of White Chocolate)
-3 Eggs
-¼ cup of Caster Sugar
-1 tbsp of Cocoa Powder
-300ml of Thickened Cream (must be suitable for whipping)
-Grated Chocolate, to serve (this is how I decorate mine but this can be changed)

Using electric beaters, start by whipping your cream in one of the smaller bowls until it forms firm peaks, being careful not to over-beat. Once whipped, put the cream aside for the moment.

Step 1

Break up your chocolate and place it in the top of the double boiler. Place the double boiler (with water in the lower section) on low-medium heat and stir frequently. When the chocolate is smooth and fully melted, take the chocolate off the heat and leave in to cool slightly.

Step 2

Place eggs and sugar in one of the smaller mixing bowls and beat with clean electric beaters for 5 minutes, or until mixture is pale, thickened and doubled in volume.

Step 3

Mix sifted cocoa powder into the egg/sugar mixture and stir well.

Step 4

Fold the cooled chocolate into the egg/sugar/cocoa mixture and stir well. This will cause the mixture to thicken significantly.

Step 5

Now using a large metal spoon, gradually fold the whipped cream into the chocolate mixture and stir well until all the cream has been incorporated.

Step 6

Move the mousse into a serving bowl and smooth out the top using a spoon.

Step 7

Sprinkle grated chocolate over the top of the mousse.

Step 8

Finally cover the bowl with plastic wrap and keep in the fridge.

Step 9

And You’re Done!

DIY Chocolate Mousse

Even though this mousse will leave you with a lot of dirty dishes, it is really easy to make and is ridiculously delicious. This mousse can be made up to three days before serving and the longer it sits in the fridge the better it gets. I use a combination of three different chocolates that give a sweet, rich flavour but you can change this recipe to all dark if you like it really strong to all white (don’t add cocoa powder) if you prefer it sweet. Oh… and if the world does end today/tomorrow (it won’t) at least you will spend your last few moments consuming delicious calories that your won’t have to work off!

DIY “Fruit Salad” Cocktail

Next week I’m off to the beach camping with a big group of friends. I can’t wait for a week of relaxing in the sun, playing cricket on the beach and having a drink or two (or three or four) with friends. Today’s tutorial is my take on the traditional fruit punch, combined with the icy refreshment of a Slurpee This is the ultimate summer drink and it is so delicious. I can’t stand cocktail recipes when you have to go out and buy a heap of obscure alcohols that are impossible to find and that you’ll never use again. This recipe uses only Bacardi Rum but it is very versatile so you could use vodka, tequila or even champagne as an alternative.

So Let’s Get Started!

You Will Need
-A Blender
-Watermelon (This is cut into cubes and frozen overnight)
-Orange & Mango Juice, chilled (This could also be an orange & mango flavoured mineral water)
-2 shots of Bacardi Rum, per person (I like this quite strong but use one shot per person if desired)
-Crushed Ice
-Margarita Glasses
-Slices of Pineapple, to garnish
-Swizzle Sticks, Umbrellas and Straws, to garnish

Take your watermelon cubes and place them in the blender along with some ice. Blend until it creates a pureed, Slurpee-like consistency.

Step 1

Pour in your Bacardi (or alternative) and add your orange & mango juice/mineral water. Blend on low speed until combined.

Step 2

Pour into a margarita glass and add a wedge of pineapple to the rim of the glass. Decorate with a swizzle stick, umbrella and a straw.

And You’re Done!

DIY "Fruit Salad" Cocktail

This drink is so yummy and it might even be all you want to drink in summer. I like to also add a little cocktail umbrella and a swizzle stick because I can’t resist anything kitsch and it makes me feel like I’m on a cruise in the Caribbean or something equally as glamorous. This is definitely what I’ll be drinking at the beach. This drink is very versatile and it can also be made into a refreshing mocktail if you don’t drink or if you want to use this for a kid’s party… Just hold the alcohol.

Hopefully all these ideas have inspired you to create some great things for Christmas this year, whether it’s for yourself or for someone special. I’ve road-tested all these ideas and only chosen ones that are inexpensive, simple to make and use easy-to-find materials.

DIY IDEA #10: Easy Paper Ornaments

DIY Easy Paper Ornaments

This is another really simple DIY project for Christmas that uses materials that most people have lying around their houses. You can use any coloured paper and you could also use pinking shears, scalloped shears or border punches to create a completely different appearance. Also experimenting with different sized paper strips will alter the final shape of the ornament.
*Note: These are beautiful ornaments but they are quite delicate so when you store them after Christmas, store them carefully.

You Will Need
-Coloured Paper (You can use any colours you like)
-Scissors
-Ribbon
-Stapler
-Ruler
-Pencil

Start cutting 2cm (0.8 of an inch) wide strips of paper and varying colours. Use a ruler and a pencil to measure and mark your strips so they are even.

Step 1 (Easy Paper Ornaments)

Cut your strips of paper in varying lengths. Keeping the smallest strips towards the centre, the largest strips towards the outside and everything else in between, arrange your strips in a symmetric fashion. An odd number of strips works best for this.

Staple one end of all the arranged strips together

Step 3 (Easy Paper Ornaments)

Cut 12cm (5 Inches) of ribbon and fold it exactly in half. Take the two cut ends of the ribbon and place 1cm (0.4 of an inch) either side of the middle strip of paper.

Step 4 (Easy Paper Ornaments)

Keeping all the unstapled ends level and keeping the ribbon in place, staple these and the ribbon together. You should now have a strange, yet symmetrically shaped ornament with a ribbon for hanging.

DIY IDEA #11: Typo Canvas

DIY Glittery Typo Canvas

This is a great piece, which can be displayed in a photo frame or against cardboard/ MDF board. The different textures used make this design really stand out. This is a versatile artwork and not necessarily just a Christmas piece as you can use any coloured paint, different textures, a patterned background or any quote. This would make a great house-warming present.

You Will Need
-An A4 (21x 29.7 centimetres or 8.3x 11.7 inches) Sheet of Canvas or Card Paper
– Gold or Silver Glitter Pain
– An Exacto-Knife or a Stanley Knife (You can use scissors but it is a bit difficult and time consuming)
-A Pencil
-Paper Clips
– Text Template (You can create your own on Word or Photoshop and DaFont is a great website to download new fonts)

Firstly, Print out your text template. Make sure you use a text that is quite large and bold, as you will be cutting around each letter later on and small letters are quite tricky. Also make sure your document is A4-sized and landscape before you print.

Step 1 (Glittery Typo Canvas)

Using an exacto-knife (or an alternative), start cutting around each individual letter. The aim is to remove the black letters without removing any of the white, thus creating a stencil. The holes in the O’s, R’s and A’s will be cut out but make sure you keep them to you can pencil them in after.

Once you’ve cut your letters out, use some paper clips to fasten your template to your piece of paper card or sheet of canvas. Using your pencil, trace around the letters of your template. Once you’ve traced all your letters remove your template and paper clips. Pencil around the holes of the O’s, R’s and A’s now.

Step 3 (Glittery Typo Canvas)

Finally, use your glitter paint to fill in all the letters. Multiple coats may be necessary. Allow plenty of time to dry.

DIY IDEA #12: Chocolate Fudge & Gift Bags

DIY Chocolate Fudge & Gift Bags

I’ve made fudge many times and this is by far the easiest recipe I’ve come across. This fudge can be made using dark, milk or white chocolate (or even a mix). I’m planning on cutting this fudge up, packaging it nicely and sending it out as little Christmas gifts for family and friends. This is a really great gift for those people that you don’t really know what to get them because most people love chocolate (just don’t give it to a Vegan, a Diabetic or someone who is Lactose Intolerant… that’s a bit awkward.)

You Will Need
-Canola Cooking Spray
-Baking Paper
-A Microwave Safe Glass Bowl
-A Fork
-A 20cm Square Pan (with high edges)
-Plastic Sandwich Bag
-Air-Tight Container
-Brown Kraft Paper
-Ribbon

For the Fudge:

-400g (1 can) Sweetened Condensed Milk
-100g Butter, cubed
-250g (1 1/4 cups, firmly packed) Brown Sugar
-1 Tbs Golden Syrup
-100g good-quality chocolate, finely chopped

Spray a 20cm square pan with the canola oil spray, then line with non-stick baking paper.

Step 1 (Chocolate Fudge)

Place the condensed milk, butter, brown sugar and golden syrup in a large heat-resistant glass bowl.Cook, uncovered for 10-12 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes, on Medium-High, or until bubbles appear over the whole surface of the mixture.

Step 2 (Chocolate Fudge)

Add the chocolate and stir until smooth and well combined.

Step 3 (Chocolate Fudge)

 

Pour immediately into the prepared pan. Place in the fridge for 1 hour or until firm.

Step 4 (Chocolate Fudge)

Cut into squares. Place fudge in a air-tight container, lined with baking paper and keep in the fridge. To present as a gift, place a few pieces into a plastic sandwich bag. Wrap the plastic bag in brown Kraft paper and tie the top with a ribbon.

DIY IDEA #7: Hand-Stamped Christmas Paper & Patty Pan Gift Tags

DIY Hand-Stamped Christmas Paper

DIY Patty Pan Gift Tags

This is exactly how I’ll be presenting my family and friend’s gifts this Christmas. Both the gift tags and the wrapping paper tied up with ribbon or raffia have a great homemade look and people feel very flattered that you have created paper/ gift tags just for them. This Christmas paper is so easy to make and is a great Christmas activity for young kids to do. You can cut up some different shaped sponges for them to use, get them some paintbrushes or even do some good old-fashioned finger-painting. They will love it!

 

You Will Need

For The Patty Pan Gift Tags:
-Patty Pan/ Cupcake Cases (they can be plain or have a pattern… I found these in my cupboard)
-White Card
-Metallic Marker
-Glue
-Ribbon (optional)

For The Hand-Stamped Christmas Paper:
-Acrylic/ Poster Paint (any colour of your choice)
-Brown Kraft Paper
-Sponges
-Scissors
-A Plastic/Paper Disposable Plate

 

Firstly, flatten out your cupcake cases and place them under a stack of heavy books over night. For each tag your going to need two matching cases

Step 1 (Patty Pan Gift Tags)

Once your cupcake cases are flattened down, take your two matching cases and glue them together with the good sides facing out. Don’t worry if the tags are still creased/wrinkled as this adds to the homemade charm. Allow some time for the glue to dry.
*If you wanted these gift tags to have a ribbon that you can tie to a gift bag take two 10cm (4 Inches) pieces of ribbon tie them together at one end and place the tied end between the patty pan cases prior to gluing them together. Once dried the ribbon can be used to tie the tag to the handle of a gift bag

Step 2 (Patty Pan Gift Tags)

Now take your white card and cut a circle the same size as the inner circle of the cupcake case (this would have been the base of the patty pan prior to flattening)

Step 3 (Patty Pan Gift Tags)

Glue the white card circle to the inner circle on one side of the patty pan gift tag. This is where you will write the name of whoever is receiving the gift. You can use the metallic marker for this.

Step 4 (Patty Pan Gift Tags)

Now for the wrapping paper. Start by cutting your desired shape/s out of a sponge. I’ve gone with circles just to match the polka dots on the cupcake cases but you can use stars, diamonds, hearts… anything.

Pour some paint onto a plastic/paper disposable plate and dip your sponge in squeeze excess paint away and start stamping your Kraft paper in any pattern. Allow plenty of time for your paint to dry

 DIY IDEA #5: Chocolate Ripple Cake

DIY Chocolate Ripple Cake

This is another Australian classic. It is rare to go to a Christmas party or any summer party for that matter in Australia without experiencing the glory that is The Chocolate Ripple Cake. I’m not sure if other countries have a similar version but this recipe is so yummy and so easy to make that it would be rude not to share it with the rest of the world.

You Will Need
-A Large Mixing Bowl
-A Dinner Spoon and Knife
-Electric Beaters
-A Serving Plate

For The Chocolate Ripple Cake:
-250g (9 Ounce) packet of Chocolate Ripple Biscuits (This is what they are called in Australia but you can use any chocolate biscuit/cookie without icing or filling. It needs to be a hard biscuit so don’t use anything soft)
-500ml Thickened Cream (This must be suitable for whipping)
-1 Teaspoon of Caster Sugar
-1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Essence or Vanilla Extract

 

Firstly, pour your cream into a large mixing bowl and add vanilla extract/essence and caster sugar to the cream. Use an electric beater to whip the cream mixture until it forms stiff peaks

Step 1 (Chocolate Ripple Cake)Spread one biscuit with 1 ½ teaspoons of cream then top with another biscuit. Top that biscuit with another 1 ½ teaspoons cream and another biscuit. Place biscuits on their side onto the serving plate in a straight line. Repeat until all biscuits have been used to form a log shape. You can also create a ring/wreath shape but you will need more biscuits and more cream.

Step 2 (Chocolate Ripple Cake)

Spread the remaining cream over the entire cake.

Step 3 (Chocolate Ripple Cake)

Refrigerate covered in plastic wrap for around 6 hours before serving. To stop the plastic wrap from sticking to the cream place toothpicks around the top and sides of the cake.

Step 4 (Chocolate Ripple Cake)

Just before serving decorate the cake with grated chocolate or by with some of the crushed chocolate biscuit.

DIY IDEA #9: Glittery Glass Jars

DIY Glittery Glass Jars

This is a great way to reuse glass jars from pasta sauce, olives (if your mental enough to actually eat those horrible things) or sundried tomatoes… anything. You can use these glittery glass jars as vases or tea-light candleholders and they will look amazing on your Christmas table.
* Note: These jars cannot be washed. If they get dusty wipe them gently with a dry cloth.

You Will Need
-Glitter (any colour but I’m using gold)
-Mod Podge or Clear-Drying Craft Glue
– Old Glass Jars (Throw away the metal tops and soak the jars in water for a few days so you can remove the labels easily)
-Clear Spray Paint/ Top Coat
-Newspaper (this is to catch the excess glitter)
-Electrical or Masking Tape
-An old paintbrush (for spreading the glue)

 

Firstly, make sure your jars are clean and have no bits of the label remaining

Step 1 (Glittery Glass Jars)

Use electrical/ masking tape to expose the areas you want to have glitter and cover the areas that will remain bare. I taped a chevron pattern in this step

Step 2 (Glittery Glass Jars)

Place newspaper all over your workspace. You’ll be glittering/gluing your jar over this as to not cause a huge mess

Step 3 (Glittery Glass Jars)

Where your glass is exposed (not taped) brush on a solid but not dripping layer of your Mod Podge or glue.

Step 4 (Glittery Glass Jars)

Sprinkle your glitter on the glued/Mod Podge-d areas until it creates full coverage with no glass/glue showing through. Spray with a clear top coat and leave to dry for a while. If your glitter is not giving full coverage repeat the last two steps using a small amount of glue in the gaps. Spray again and leave to dry

Step 5 (Glittery Glass Jars)

Once dried remove all the tape and gently shake off excess glitter. Gather your newspaper up carefully and throw it away with the excess glitter/glue

And You’re Done!

The 12 DIY's of Christmas

Hi Deerest Friends,

So yesterday I started my ‘The 12 DIY’s of Christmas’ Series, which is presenting 12 fun DIY Christmas projects over four consecutive days. So if you haven’t seen Part 1 yet definitely check it out and stay tuned for more craft and more creativity over the next two days.

DIY IDEA #4: Doily Christmas Lights

DIY Doily Christmas Lights

This idea is so inexpensive, easy to make and is a simple way to dress up a boring set of Christmas lights. This is one of the only DIY’s I’ve done so far where I didn’t have to purchase anything as most of these things were just lying around the house.

*Note: I left my doily lights on for quite a while and they didn’t get hot enough to create a fire hazard with the paper, however accidents can happen so always keep an eye on your lights.

You Will Need
-A Pack of Small Paper Doilies
-A String of Christmas Lights
-Scissors
-Glue
-Pencil

Firstly, lightly mark the centre of the doily with a pencil. From the edge of the doily, cut one straight line into the centre mark

Step 1 (Doily Christmas Lights)

Using the cut line, cut a 3cm wide hole in the centre of the doily. Avoid folding or creasing the doily.

Now place one Christmas light through the centre hole

Bring both sides of the cut line together creating a cone shape with a hole at the end, which the light is sitting through. You want it tight enough that the doily won’t fall off the light. Finally, glue the overlapping parts of the paper doily together. Avoid using heavy glue as it will seep through the paper and give a stained appearance.

 DIY IDEA #8: Cookie Christmas Tree

 DIY Cookie Christmas Tree

Who doesn’t love cookies? Well this DIY idea takes cookies and turns them into a gorgeous (and edible) Christmas decoration. You can vary this idea in so many ways. You can use a choc-chip mix, ginger bread mix, shortbread or just a plain sugar cookie like I am. You can sift icing sugar on the finished tree to make it look like snow, you can add green food colouring to the cookie dough to create a more traditional green cookie tree, you can use sprinkles to look like Christmas decorations or you can cover the whole thing in chocolate because… well I like chocolate.

You Will Need
-4 or 5 Different-sized Star Shaped Cookie Cutters (I got 5 in a single pack but individual cookie cutters in different sizes will work to0)
-Mixing bowls (one large and two medium sized)
-Two Baking Trays
-Baking Paper/ Cooking Spray
-Plastic Wrap
-Rolling Pin
-Piping Bag
-Items for Decoration (e.g. Sprinkles, Cachous, Chocolate, Icing Sugar)

For The Sugar Cookies:
-1 ⅓ Cups of Plain/All-Purpose Flour
-½ Teaspoon of Baking Powder
-Pinch of Salt
-½ Cup of White Sugar
-¼ Cup of soft Unsalted Butter
-1 large Egg
-1½ Teaspoon of Milk
-¼ Teaspoon of Vanilla Essence or Extract
-Flour for dusting finished cookies

For The Royal Icing (This isn’t for decorating but to hold the tree together):
-1 ½ Cups of sifted Icing Sugar
-1 Egg White
-½ Teaspoon of Lemon Juice

Firstly, sift the flour, baking powder and salt into your large mixing bowl and mix together.

Step 1 (Cookie Christmas Tree)

In another bowl cream the butter and sugar with a wooden spoon and then mix in the egg milk and vanilla.

Step 2 (Cookie Christmas Tree)
Scrape the butter/sugar mixture into the flour mixture and stir to make a soft dough.

Step 3 (Cookie Christmas Tree)

Cover the bowl with the plastic wrap and place it in the fridge to chill for 30 minutes.

Step 4 (Cookie Christmas Tree)

After 30 minutes, preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and take the chilled dough out of the bowl and place it on a clean bench top, which has been dusted with flour. Lightly dust the top of the dough with flour too.

Step 5 (Cookie Christmas Tree)

Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough until it is around 5 millimetres thick (¼ of an inch). If the dough is sticking to the rolling pin dust the dough with more flour.

Step 6 (Cookie Christmas Tree)

Start cutting out your dough. I cut about 2- 5 cookies out using each different-sized cookie cutter. There is no exact number as it depends how big you want your tree to be.

Step 7 (Cookie Christmas Tree)

Place each cut cookie onto a baking tray line with baking paper or sprayed with oil. Bake the cookies around 5-10 minutes but check them often. Once cooked, allow the cookies to fully cool before removing them from the tray.

Step 8 (Cookie Christmas Tree)

Now for the royal icing. Lightly whisk the egg white and the lemon juice in a bowl. Gradually add icing sugar and whisk until smooth and combined.

Step 9 (Cookie Christmas Tree)

Move your royal icing into a piping bag with a round nozzle. Starting with the largest cookie pipe around a teaspoon of royal icing onto the centre of the star and place another cookie on top. Rotate the star shape each time.

Step 10 (Cookie Christmas Tree)

Continue this process from the largest star until you’ve only got one of the smallest stars left. Use the icing to stick this one on top, upright. Allow some time for the royal icing to harden and then decorate your tree however you want.

DIY IDEA #6: Pop-Out Tree Christmas Cards

DIY Pop-Out Tree Christmas Card

This is a really clever card design that is simple to make but has that extra bit of wow factor. One great thing about this card is that while the inside has the pop-out tree design, you can decorate the front in any way you like. I kept it simple using a metallic marker, some glitter paint and some gems I had left over from yesterday’s tutorial.

You Will Need
-Pack of White Card (Each A4 page will be folded in half to create one large card)
-Green Paper (don’t use anything to thick because your going to fold this paper)
-Metallic Star Stickers (I used gold but silver looks nice too)
-Scissors
-Ruler
-Pencil
-Glue (Choose something light as anything heavy will stain the paper)
-Decorations (e.g. metallic marker, paint, stickers, gems)

Firstly, fold a piece of white card exactly in half

Step 1 (Pop-Out Tree Christmas Cards)

Using one A4 sheet of green paper rule out a large rectangle (half the page), a medium rectangle and a small rectangle. I would have loved to give exact measurements but this is really more of a trial and error exercise. Cut out the three rectangles and discard the excess paper. Fold each of the rectangles using a concertina fold and you should be left with three zigzagged pieces of paper. Try and keep your folds a consistent size (each of mine we’re around 1 centimetre)

Step 2 (Pop-Out Tree Christmas Cards)

Hold one end of you zigzagged paper and it will resemble a fan. Use some clear tape to hold this end together so the paper maintains its fan shape

Step 3 (Pop-Out Tree Christmas Cards)

Repeat with your three rectangles and you will have three fans of varying sizes

Step 4 (Pop-Out Tree Christmas Cards)

Now using your folded white card from earlier and some light glue, glue each ends of the fan to either side of the white card’s middle crease (see below). Once you’ve glued all three fans, fold the card together and place a heavy book on top for a while

Step 5 (Pop-Out Tree Christmas Cards)

Decorate the front of your card in any way you like
