So yesterday I started my ‘The 12 DIY’s of Christmas’ Series, which is presenting 12 fun DIY Christmas projects over four consecutive days. So if you haven’t seen Part 1 yet definitely check it out and stay tuned for more craft and more creativity over the next two days.
So Let’s Get Started!
DIY IDEA #4: Doily Christmas Lights
This idea is so inexpensive, easy to make and is a simple way to dress up a boring set of Christmas lights. This is one of the only DIY’s I’ve done so far where I didn’t have to purchase anything as most of these things were just lying around the house.
*Note: I left my doily lights on for quite a while and they didn’t get hot enough to create a fire hazard with the paper, however accidents can happen so always keep an eye on your lights.
You Will Need
-A Pack of Small Paper Doilies
-A String of Christmas Lights
Firstly, lightly mark the centre of the doily with a pencil. From the edge of the doily, cut one straight line into the centre mark
Using the cut line, cut a 3cm wide hole in the centre of the doily. Avoid folding or creasing the doily.
Now place one Christmas light through the centre hole
Bring both sides of the cut line together creating a cone shape with a hole at the end, which the light is sitting through. You want it tight enough that the doily won’t fall off the light. Finally, glue the overlapping parts of the paper doily together. Avoid using heavy glue as it will seep through the paper and give a stained appearance.
And You’re Done!
DIY IDEA #8: Cookie Christmas Tree
Who doesn’t love cookies? Well this DIY idea takes cookies and turns them into a gorgeous (and edible) Christmas decoration. You can vary this idea in so many ways. You can use a choc-chip mix, ginger bread mix, shortbread or just a plain sugar cookie like I am. You can sift icing sugar on the finished tree to make it look like snow, you can add green food colouring to the cookie dough to create a more traditional green cookie tree, you can use sprinkles to look like Christmas decorations or you can cover the whole thing in chocolate because… well I like chocolate.
You Will Need
-4 or 5 Different-sized Star Shaped Cookie Cutters (I got 5 in a single pack but individual cookie cutters in different sizes will work to0)
-Mixing bowls (one large and two medium sized)
-Two Baking Trays
-Baking Paper/ Cooking Spray
-Items for Decoration (e.g. Sprinkles, Cachous, Chocolate, Icing Sugar)
For The Sugar Cookies:
-1 ⅓ Cups of Plain/All-Purpose Flour
-½ Teaspoon of Baking Powder
-Pinch of Salt
-½ Cup of White Sugar
-¼ Cup of soft Unsalted Butter
-1 large Egg
-1½ Teaspoon of Milk
-¼ Teaspoon of Vanilla Essence or Extract
-Flour for dusting finished cookies
For The Royal Icing (This isn’t for decorating but to hold the tree together):
-1 ½ Cups of sifted Icing Sugar
-1 Egg White
-½ Teaspoon of Lemon Juice
Firstly, sift the flour, baking powder and salt into your large mixing bowl and mix together.
In another bowl cream the butter and sugar with a wooden spoon and then mix in the egg milk and vanilla.
Scrape the butter/sugar mixture into the flour mixture and stir to make a soft dough.
Cover the bowl with the plastic wrap and place it in the fridge to chill for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and take the chilled dough out of the bowl and place it on a clean bench top, which has been dusted with flour. Lightly dust the top of the dough with flour too.
Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough until it is around 5 millimetres thick (¼ of an inch). If the dough is sticking to the rolling pin dust the dough with more flour.
Start cutting out your dough. I cut about 2- 5 cookies out using each different-sized cookie cutter. There is no exact number as it depends how big you want your tree to be.
Place each cut cookie onto a baking tray line with baking paper or sprayed with oil. Bake the cookies around 5-10 minutes but check them often. Once cooked, allow the cookies to fully cool before removing them from the tray.
Now for the royal icing. Lightly whisk the egg white and the lemon juice in a bowl. Gradually add icing sugar and whisk until smooth and combined.
Move your royal icing into a piping bag with a round nozzle. Starting with the largest cookie pipe around a teaspoon of royal icing onto the centre of the star and place another cookie on top. Rotate the star shape each time.
Continue this process from the largest star until you’ve only got one of the smallest stars left. Use the icing to stick this one on top, upright. Allow some time for the royal icing to harden and then decorate your tree however you want.
And You’re Done!
DIY IDEA #6: Pop-Out Tree Christmas Cards
This is a really clever card design that is simple to make but has that extra bit of wow factor. One great thing about this card is that while the inside has the pop-out tree design, you can decorate the front in any way you like. I kept it simple using a metallic marker, some glitter paint and some gems I had left over from yesterday’s tutorial.
You Will Need
-Pack of White Card (Each A4 page will be folded in half to create one large card)
-Green Paper (don’t use anything to thick because your going to fold this paper)
-Metallic Star Stickers (I used gold but silver looks nice too)
-Glue (Choose something light as anything heavy will stain the paper)
-Decorations (e.g. metallic marker, paint, stickers, gems)
Firstly, fold a piece of white card exactly in half
Using one A4 sheet of green paper rule out a large rectangle (half the page), a medium rectangle and a small rectangle. I would have loved to give exact measurements but this is really more of a trial and error exercise. Cut out the three rectangles and discard the excess paper. Fold each of the rectangles using a concertina fold and you should be left with three zigzagged pieces of paper. Try and keep your folds a consistent size (each of mine we’re around 1 centimetre)
Hold one end of you zigzagged paper and it will resemble a fan. Use some clear tape to hold this end together so the paper maintains its fan shape
Repeat with your three rectangles and you will have three fans of varying sizes
Now using your folded white card from earlier and some light glue, glue each ends of the fan to either side of the white card’s middle crease (see below). Once you’ve glued all three fans, fold the card together and place a heavy book on top for a while
Decorate the front of your card in any way you like
And You’re Done!
